Waiheke Island

Off the coast of Auckland lies a little island named Waiheke. It is well known for being a wine growing region and is an all-round beautiful holiday destination with its lovely beaches. It’s a 40 minute ferry ride to the Island and the journey is very easy.

We were going there in mid-winter for my 24th birthday so I knew we weren’t going to be sampling the pristine beaches but I was more than looking forward to the wine tasting!

I had found a little Airbnb close to the centre of town and was delighted to see that it was just perfect – a gorgeous view overlooking the ocean and a king-sized bed in a warm studio apartment. I was borrowing Carole’s car for the weekend so we spent a bit of time exploring the small island which was a true gem. I was treated to a lovely Italian meal in the evening and in the morning we drove to the opposite end of the island to visit Man O’ War Vineyard for wine tasting and a lunch platter overlooking the beautiful ocean.

So 24 hours on Waiheke was a complete success and of course went far too quickly for my liking. A thoroughly enjoyable weekend and I only have Fabio to thank for that!

    Dear Rachel

I received your first letter from New Zealand a couple of days ago, after a plethora of ones catching up on Australian trips with some wonderful pictures. You certainly have had a ‘ fair dinkum time’ I think that’s the right vernacular. I can quite see why you want to prolong the adventure.

Do you have a visa to stay in New Zealand for any length of time? If so, you will be looking for work again, you must be expert at Coffee shops and Bars by now.

I believe you have met up with your friend that emigrated, plenty of chat there then, she must have been amazed at all you have been able to do.

Life here goes on as usual nothing as exciting as you, that’s why I enjoy all your escapades, keep them coming, you will have some lovely memories to look back on.

    Lots of love Grandma
